Integrated strategy for the assessment of aquatic and terrestrial bioaccumulation
(2026)
The report proposes an integrated, tiered assessment strategy for aquatic and terrestrial bioaccumulation, combining in silico, in vitro, and invertebrate approaches to minimise vertebrate testing while maintaining the current level of environmental protection. 26 representative substances across diverse chemical classes were evaluated using fish, Hyalella azteca and in vitro hepatic biotransformation assays, supported by QSAR modelling and physicochemical parameter analysis for comparability of test results. The study shows that New Approach Methods can be used to effectively assess bioaccumulation potential, reducing reliance on animal tests. Yet, for challenging substances, critical review and complementary methods remain essential. Special guidance is provided for assessing accumulation in air-breathing organisms.
