Material Prosperity and Climate Protection. (2025). [German Environment Agency]. https://doi.org/10.60810/openumwelt-8014
Zusammenfassung englisch
The study analyses which key trends in the economy and society influence the material foundations of prosperity in Germany. It also shows how the key trends represent both opportunities and risks for climate protection. Among other things, it focuses on the growing climate impact costs for private households, the increasing pressure to invest in the expansion of resilient infrastructure and the readjustment of industrial policy in geopolitically uncertain times. In the spirit of strategic foresight, the trends are analysed and exaggerated in mini-scenarios up to 2040 in order to derive the need for action. The publication addresses decision-makers in politics and administration as well as experts in environmental and climate protection.

Materieller Wohlstand und Klimaschutz
(Umweltbundesamt, 2025)

Ability of politicians to act
(German Environment Agency, 2025)
Whether geopolitical polycrisis, progressive social fragmentation, changes in public communication and debates, increasing criticism of transformational governance, but also positive glimmers of hope such as the emergence of new governance approaches that are becoming increasingly digital, polycentric and transformative: the trend study analyses these five trends that could complicate or improve political action and shows how climate protection policy could position itself in the midst of overlapping crisis dynamics.

Foresight for the climate protection: mobile work in the future
(Umweltbundesamt, 2023) Kimpeler, Simone; Erdmann, Lorenz; Fraunhofer-Institut für System- und Innovationsforschung; Deutschland. Umweltbundesamt; Veenhoff, Sylvia
In the future, more and more people will probably no longer work in the office at the company's location or public institution, but from home, on business trips or in co-working spaces. What will the mobile working world look like in the future? What will happen to traditional office spaces? How will private spaces change? Where will people settle in the future? Which consumer products and services will be available where? This brochure from the "Foresight for climate protection" series examines the trends that will change mobile working in the future, how this may affect climate protection and what options there are for shaping climate protection policy. "Mobile Work in the Future" is a result of the project "Strategic Horizon Scanning of developments relevant to climate protection" with which the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, together with the German Environment Agency, is implementing measure 3.5.4.3 of the Climate Action Programme 2030 adopted in 2019.
