Environmental aspects have so far only partially been addressed in the discussion of antimicrobial resistance. To bring this issue into focus, UBA compiled background information and data on the topic 'Antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance in the environment'. The results show that previously considered requirements for reduction, from the perspective of UBA, are insufficient to adequately protect health and the environment. UBA sees urgent need for improvement and proposes possible options for action.

The European Green Deal, published by the European Commission in 2019, represents a new and ambitious approach to put environment and sustainability at the heart of European policy. Its ambitions are high, yet the planned measures might not be sufficient to actually meet them. The report analyzes the European Green Deal from the perspective of the German Environment Agency and places it in the context of the global challenge of achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals. In addition to necessary measures in the thematic fields of the European Green Deal, the report also addresses the structural adjustments needed as key levers to achieve the desired goals. The report concludes that the European Green Deal is an important step forward, but that further efforts beyond those described there are still needed in order to achieve a sustainable Europe. Recommendations for reducing micropollutants in waters
(2018) Ahting, Maren; Brauer, Frank; Duffek, Anja; Ebert, Ina; Eckhardt, Alexander; Hassold, Enken; Helmecke, Manuela; Kirst, Ingo; Krause, Bernd; Lepom, Peter; Leuthold, Sandra; Mathan, Cindy; Mohaupt, Volker; Moltmann, Johann F.; Müller, Alexandra; Nöh, Ingrid; Pickl, Christina; Pirntke, Ulrike; Pohl, Korinna; Rechenberg, Jörg; Suhr, Michael; Thierbach, Claudia; Tietjen, Lars; von der Ohe, Peter C.; Winde, Christine; Deutschland. Umweltbundesamt
Residues of medicinal products, pesticides, biozides and other chemicals can adversely affect the environment and human health already in low concentrations. These micropollutants are increasingly detected in our waters not least due to improved analytics. Precautionary measures are needed to prevent future stresses on our waterbodies. Therefore, the German Environment Agency (UBA) has analysed entry pathways, named critical substance characteristics and proposed a combination of measures consisting of measures at the source, in use and for wastewater treatment serving the objective of comprehensive water protection.

Antibiotika und Antibiotikaresistenzen in der Umwelt
(2018) Adler, Nicole; Balzer, Frederike; Blondzik, Katrin; Brauer, Frank; Chorus, Ingrid; Ebert, Ina; Fiedler, Traute; Förster, Christina; Heidemeier, Joachim; Grummt, Tamara; Hein, Arne; Helmecke, Manuela; Hilliges, Falk; Kirst, Ingo; Konradi, Sabine; Klasen, Jutta; Küster, Anette; Krause, Bernd; Pirntke, Ulrike; Roskosch, Andrea; Schönfeld, Jens; Selinka, Hans-Christoph; Straff, Wolfgang; Szewzyk, Regine; Westphal-Settele, Kathi; Deutschland. Umweltbundesamt
