Generell sind die Belastungen von Meeresfrüchten noch so gering, dass sie verzehrt werden können, in der Nähe von freiliegendem Sprengstoff können jedoch kritische Konzentrationen erreicht werden. dc.description.abstractLarge quantities of conventional munitions and chemical warfare agents were dumped globally as well as in the North Sea and Baltic Sea during and after the world wars. Due to their toxic, carcinogenic and/or mutagenic properties, these substances can harm the marine environment and humans. Ongoing corrosion of the munitions leads to an increased release of contaminants into the environment. This could be shown by increased residues of energetic compounds (EC) in blue mussels over the last 30 years. Fish and sediments from Lower Saxony show low contamination. Accumulation of EC in the marine food web has low probability as except for mussels and flatfish, no EC were found in the eelpouts, eider ducks, harbour porpoises and seals. Overall the contamination of seafood still seems to be such low that they can be eaten, but at chunks of EC without metal shell, critical concentrations of EC can be reached.
