Der überarbeitete Luftqualitätsindex (LQI) des Umweltbundesamtes 2025

Abstract

Der Luftqualitätsindex (LQI) des Umweltbundesamtes (UBA) bewertet die Luftqualität in Deutschland anhand der Konzentrationen von Ozon (O3), Stickstoffdioxid (NO2), Feinstaub (PM10, PM2,5) und Schwefeldioxid (SO2). Die Einteilung erfolgt stündlich in fünf Kategorien von „sehr gut“ bis „sehr schlecht“. Aufgrund der aktualisierten Empfehlungen der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) von 2021 sowie der Überarbeitung der europäischen Luftqualitätsrichtlinie wurde eine Anpassung des UBA-LQI notwendig. Diese basiert auf aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen zur Krankheitshäufigkeit und Sterblichkeit und folgt einem risikobasierten Ansatz. Zudem erhält die Bevölkerung stündlich aktuelle Informationen zur Luftqualität. Mit Verhaltenstipps – sowohl für die Allgemeinheit als auch für empfindliche Personengruppen – können Menschen ihr Verhalten besser an die jeweilige Luftqualität anpassen. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the German Environment Agency (UBA) assesses air quality in Germany based on the concentrations of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The classification is updated hourly and divided into five categories ranging from “very good” to “very poor”. Due to the updated air quality guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 and the revision of the European Air Quality Directive, an adjustment of the UBA-AQI became necessary. The revised index is risk-based and draws on the latest scientific evidence regarding morbidity and mortality associated with air pollution exposure. The update aims to provide the public with more timely and transparent information on air quality. Through hourly updates and targeted behavioural recommendations – for both the general population and sensitive groups – individuals are encouraged to adjust their activities according to the current air quality, thereby helping to reduce potential health risks.
