dc.description.abstract | In 2004theEuropeanCommissionandMemberStatesinitiatedactivitiestowardsaharmonizedap-<BR>proach forHumanBiomonitoringsurveysthroughoutEurope.Themainobjectivewastosustainen-<BR>vironmental healthpolicybybuildingacoherentandsustainableframeworkandbyincreasingthe<BR>comparability ofdataacrosscountries.Apilotstudy totestcommonguidelinesforsettingupsurveys<BR>wasconsideredakeystepinthisprocess.Throughabottom-upapproachthatincludedallstakeholders,<BR>a jointstudyprotocolwaselaborated.<BR>FromSeptember2011tillFebruary2012,17Europeancountriescollecteddatafrom1844mother-<BR>child pairsintheframeofDEMOnstrationofastudytoCoordinateandPerformHumanBiomonitoring<BR>on aEuropeanScale(DEMOCOPHES). Mercury inhairandurinarycadmiumandcotininewereselected<BR>as biomarkersofexposurecoveredbysufficient analyticalexperience.PhthalatemetabolitesandBi-<BR>sphenol Ainurinewereaddedtotakeintoaccountincreasingpublicandpoliticalawarenessfor<BR>emerging typesofcontaminantsandtotestlessadvancedmarkers/markerscoveredbylessanalytical<BR>experience.Extensiveeffortstowardschemo-analyticalcomparabilitywereincluded.<BR>The pilotstudyshowed thatcommonapproachescanbefoundinacontextofconsiderablediffer-<BR>ences withrespecttoexperienceandexpertize,socio-culturalbackground,economicsituationandna-<BR>tional priorities.ItalsoevidencedthatcomparableHumanBiomonitoringresultscanbeobtainedinsuch<BR>context.AEuropeannetworkwasbuilt,exchanging information,expertise andexperiences,andpro-<BR>viding trainingonallaspectsofasurvey.Akeychallengewas finding therightbalancebetweenarigid<BR>structure allowingmaximalcomparabilityanda flexibleapproachincreasingfeasibilityandcapacity<BR>building. NextstepsinEuropeanharmonizationinHumanBiomonitoringsurveysincludetheestab-<BR>lishment ofajointprocessforprioritizationofsubstancestocoverandbiomarkerstodevelop,linking<BR>biomonitoring surveyswithhealthexaminationsurveysandwithresearch,andcopingwiththediverse<BR>implementations ofEUregulationsandinternationalguidelineswithrespecttoethicsandprivacy.<BR>©2014ElsevierInc.Allrightsreserved. | en |
