Environmentally Harmful Subsidies In Germany 2014
(2014) Köder, Lea; Burger, Andreas; Eckermann, Frauke
In 2010 environmentally harmful subsidies in Germany amounted to more than €52 billion. The state granted subsidies among others to the lignite industry and aviation sector. The volume of subsidies therefore remains high - and there is no sign of a systematic reduction. Environmentally harmful subsidies not only thwart environmental protection, they are also a burden on public funds. A reduction would create the financial means for the state to shape a sustainable policy, for example for the benefit of climate protection or to modernize transport infrastructure. In its updated edition of the "Environmentally Harmful Subsidies in Germany" report the Federal Environment Agency recommends that these subsidies be systematically reduced without delay.

The European Green Deal, published by the European Commission in 2019, represents a new and ambitious approach to put environment and sustainability at the heart of European policy. Its ambitions are high, yet the planned measures might not be sufficient to actually meet them. The report analyzes the European Green Deal from the perspective of the German Environment Agency and places it in the context of the global challenge of achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals. In addition to necessary measures in the thematic fields of the European Green Deal, the report also addresses the structural adjustments needed as key levers to achieve the desired goals. The report concludes that the European Green Deal is an important step forward, but that further efforts beyond those described there are still needed in order to achieve a sustainable Europe. In its indicator report Data on the Environment 2017, the German Environment Agency gives a comprehensive overview of the state of the environment, the causes of environmental pollution and leverage points for improvement. A total of 50 indicators have been selected from all environmental domains and, wherever possible, underpinned by policy targets, as defined in documents such as the German Sustainable Development Strategy or EU directives. Thus, the environmental indicator system is also a record of environmental policy. Quelle: https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/
