Derivation of Environmental Quality Standards for 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene

To assess the risks posed by legacy munition contamination, preliminary quality standards for TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) were developed for the protected resources of pelagic communities in freshwater and seawater, for human health via seafood consumption, and for drinking water. The quality standard for the pelagic community (freshwater and seawater) is the "critical quality standard" for deriving the proposed environmental quality standard (EQS).To protect aquatic communities in freshwater and saltwater, an annual average environmental quality standard (AA-EQS) of 0.15 µg/L and a maximum acceptable concentration (MAC-EQS) of 1.8 µg/L are proposed for TNT.

The two-volume policy report is the first comprehensive legal assessment, which systematically compares national legal frameworks for munitions in the Baltic Sea Region and derives tangible proposals for EU-wide harmonisation. This first volume gives an overview on international and European legislation regarding munitions at sea, relevant international research projects and the national situation on handling munition in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Sweden. The national chapters feature the national legislation, responsible authorities, procedures, environmental considerations, monitoring and mapping, gaps as well as a general evaluation of the legal framework.
MEER:STARK - Meeresentlastung und Resilienzstärkung: Sektorübergreifende Transformation, Anpassung, Revitalisierung und Klimaschutz für Nord- und Ostsee

Das Projekt MEER:STARK untersuchte, wie Meeresschutz und Klimaanpassung in Nord- und Ostsee miteinander verknüpft werden können. Analysiert wurden die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Klimawandel, Biodiversitätsverlust und weiteren Belastungen mariner Ökosysteme sowie bestehende Herausforderungen in Governance und Umsetzung. Anhand der Themen Eutrophierung, naturbasierter Küstenschutz und klimaangepasste Meeresschutzgebiete wurden auf Basis von Literaturanalysen und sektorübergreifenden Fachdialogen Handlungsempfehlungen für eine integrierte Meerespolitik entwickelt, um die Resilienz mariner Ökosysteme zu stärken und Synergien zwischen Meeresschutz und Klimaanpassung besser zu nutzen.
