Advanced materials promise technical solutions to support sustainable transformation. They play an important role for a variety of environmental topics worked on at UBA, such as energy transition, circular economy and chemical safety. Various sectors can benefit from the use of advanced materials, but they can also face challenges. The UBA position paper describes the area of tension between the promising use and possible challenges for environmental and health protection and other sustainability dimensions, illustrates this with various examples and derives corner stones for a safe and sustainable life cycle of advanced materials. Better Regulation through more Transparency in Regulatory Impact Assessments

A future-oriented environmental policy requires a comprehensive, balanced and scientifically sound presentation of regulatory impacts on both the national and European level. This is because a comprehensive and objective presentation of regulatory impacts is foundational in ensuring that interests such as environmental protection or social justice are given appropriate weight in the democratic opinion-making process.In order to arrive at a practice of regulatory impact assessments in Germany that ensures a balanced and comprehensive consideration of environmental impacts and at least meets the requirements of the EU impact assessments, ⁠UBA⁠ recommends some reforms described in this position paper.
Environmental protection under TTIP

The declared objective of the planned free trade agreement with the US (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership - TTIP) is to unify EU and USA standards as much as possible by regulatory cooperation. However, an improper design of regulatory cooperation carries considerable risks for environmental protection in the EU: environmental standards might be lowered and environmental properties of products may be endangered.

International environmental and sustainability policy during and after the Covid-19 pandemic

The position paper discusses the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the global economy and geopolitics, for the countries of the Global South and for international environmental and sustainability policy. On this basis, the paper proposes approaches for a substantive reorientation of international environmental and sustainability policy. For example, the nexus of environment and health should be given more attention and the resilience of economic and social systems should be established as a requirement. The position paper reflects, which guiding principles for future environmental and sustainability policy might be necessary in addition to the existing ones in order to achieve firstly effective crisis management of current and possibly future pandemics and secondly the kick-off into socio-ecological transformations needed to reduce long-term environmental risks. The proposals are based on a careful analysis of the experience with the Covid-19 pandemic. For example, the nexus of environment and health should be given more attention. Furthermore, it is proposed to put resilience of economic and social systems centre stage, and include principles of structural justice, solidarity, adaptive management, the strengthening of state institutions capable of action and a new digital culture as requirements. We are facing an enormous challenge: the climate crisis and scarcity of resources require a consistent paradigm shift in housing construction and urban development. Quality of life, health and aesthetics must be combined with environmental, resource and climate protection. This position paper of the German Environment Agency and the Commission for Sustainable Building (KNBau) at the German Environment Agency presents recommendations for the creation of affordable housing that is environmentally, climate and resource efficient, and at the same time climate-adapted, health and socially compatible. The recommendations are primarily addressed to federal policy-makers, especially the departments of building and urban development, environment, climate protection, transport and health. Shaping environmental policy in a citizen- friendly manner

This publication provides answers to these questions and uses the latest findings from psychology, cognitive science and behavioral economics. An essential part of the publication is a checklist for the development of behavior-oriented instruments. It contains concrete guidelines for a better design of environmental policy instruments, be it at federal, state or local level.

Das geplante Freihandelsabkommen mit den USA (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership - TTIP) hat unter anderem das erklärte Ziel, durch die sogenannte Regulatorische Kooperation die Standards in der EU und den USA so weit wie möglich zu vereinheitlichen. Für den Umweltschutz in der EU birgt eine nicht sachgerechte Gestaltung der Regulatorischen Kooperation jedoch erhebliche Risiken: Umweltstandards könnten sinken und die Umwelteigenschaften von Produkten gefährdet werden.
