Recommendations for reducing micropollutants in waters
(2018) Ahting, Maren; Brauer, Frank; Duffek, Anja; Ebert, Ina; Eckhardt, Alexander; Hassold, Enken; Helmecke, Manuela; Kirst, Ingo; Krause, Bernd; Lepom, Peter; Leuthold, Sandra; Mathan, Cindy; Mohaupt, Volker; Moltmann, Johann F.; Müller, Alexandra; Nöh, Ingrid; Pickl, Christina; Pirntke, Ulrike; Pohl, Korinna; Rechenberg, Jörg; Suhr, Michael; Thierbach, Claudia; Tietjen, Lars; von der Ohe, Peter C.; Winde, Christine; Deutschland. Residues of medicinal products, pesticides, biozides and other chemicals can adversely affect the environment and human health already in low concentrations. These micropollutants are increasingly detected in our waters not least due to improved analytics. Precautionary measures are needed to prevent future stresses on our waterbodies. Therefore, the German Environment Agency (UBA) has analysed entry pathways, named critical substance characteristics and proposed a combination of measures consisting of measures at the source, in use and for wastewater treatment serving the objective of comprehensive water protection.

Reducing the input of chemicals into waters: trifluoroacetate (TFA) as a persistent and mobile substance with many sources
(Umweltbundesamt, 2022) Adlunger, Kirsten; Anke, Julia Margaretha; Bachem, Gunnar; Banning, Helena; Biegel-Engler, Annegret; Blondzik, Katrin; Braun, Ulrike; Eckhardt, Alexander; Gildemeister, Daniela; Hilliges, Falk; Hoffmann, Gabriele; Schneider, Franziska; Jentzsch, Franziska; Klitzke, Sondra; Kuckelkorn, Jochen; Martens, Kerstin; Müller, Alexandra; Pickl, Christina; Rechenberg, Jörg; Sättler, Daniel; Schmidt, Uwe; Speichert, Gunther; Warnke, Ingo; Wehner, Jeannine; Wischer, Ronny; Deutschland. Umweltbundesamt
Trifluoroacetate (TFA) is a mobile and persistent substance that is primarily introduced into the water cycle through the degradation of various fluorochemicals and remains in the environment in the long term. TFA can be detected in many water bodies in relatively high concentrations with some regional hotspots. This background paper presents current data and estimates on sources, input pathways, contamination, impact and measures on TFA. It gives an outlook on first activities and options to comprehensively minimise TFA inputs to the environment. Despite gaps in knowledge, it becomes clear that consistent regulation and an overarching minimisation strategy must be initiated in the short term. Quelle: www.umweltbundesamt.de

    Towards sustainable plant protection
(Umweltbundesamt, 2022) Bär, Susanne; Foit, Kaarina Pirko; Heß, Michael; Knillmann, Saskia; Kotschik, Pia; Kuppe, Konstantin; Matezki, Steffen; Müller, Alexandra; Otto, Sally; Petzold, Nora; Pieper, Silvia; Wogram, Jörn; Deutschland. Umweltbundesamt
With the new draft regulation on the "Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products" (SUR), the European Commission is concretising the pesticide reduction target of 50% by 2030 stipulated in the Farm-to-Fork Strategy. The legally binding implementation of integrated pest management sets a new course for sustainable agriculture. However, for the success of practical implementation to contribute to species conservation and to create resilient ecosystems in the agricultural landscape, further preconditions are necessary. This scientific opinion paper provides four major recommendations for action that are needed from an environmental perspective to achieve the envisaged objectives. Quelle: www.umweltbundesamt.de
