    Predicting aircraft noise with AZB 2.0 - a best practice model being revised

    The German aircraft noise calculation model AzB (Anleitung zur Berechnung von Lärmschutzbereichen) has been developed for defining noise protection areas by assessing the noise of a predicted air traffic scenario. The AzB data base was specially designed for this purpose and it consists of 36 aircraft classes comprising civil and military jet aircraft as well as propeller-driven aircraft and helicopters. In the last decades the traffic mix has changed considerably. The share of aircraft complying with ICAO Annex 16, chapter 3 in the total air traffic volume has â€Ìat least in Germany - almost fallen to zero, whereas several aircraft with significantly lower noise emissions have been put into service. Advances in noise mitigation have also been achieved due to optimized flight operations (noise abatement departure procedures suiting to population structure, CDO, steeper approach...) Although parts of the AzB were revised and amended in 2006/2007 , its data base corresponds essentially to that published by the German Environment Agency (UBA) in 1999. The acoustic and operational data of the AzB are of limited suitability as a means of representing new and prospective aircraft types. To meet the requirements for accuracy and to achieve good accordance with measurements, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is updating the data base of the AzB on behalf of the German Environment Agency.     A standardised and practicable approach to calculating aircraft noise according to CNOSSOS-EU

    The introduction of the EU-wide harmonised noise assessment methods CNOSSOS-EU according to Annex II of the Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EG aims at establishing a calculation methodology for determining, inter alia, aircraft noise (CNOSSOS-Air), which will be applicable as from 31.12.2018 in all member states. Before the implementation of CNOSSOS-EU the national assessment methods differed in algorithms describing the sound source and propagation and furthermore in regard to input data from national databases. Additional deviations arose from different software implementations and parameter settings made by the end user. This led to the development of CNOSSOS-EU with the aim of enhanced comparability of noise maps. In the case of aircraft noise the decision was made in favor of the third edition of Doc. 29 of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC). This calculation method is a highly flexible instrument enabling flight procedure modelling in any precision depending on the application purpose. An essential precondition for comparable computation results are unique specifications for individual calculation steps allowing for a uniform approach to noise mapping. Here in particular, CNOSSOS-Air still has potential for optimisation. Due to the multitude of loopholes, e.g. when modelling turns or lateral track dispersions of swathes, the calculation method is in many ways unspecified leaving the end user with a scope of interpretation. This leads to different modelling approaches which substantially complicate a quality assurance. Furthermore CNOSSOS-Air generates flight profiles using procedural steps thus requiring sound knowledge of flight procedures, particularly the setting of thrust, flaps and landing gear. Since these parameters are usually insufficiently known they must be estimated which leads to results that correspond more or less to reality.     Harmonisierte Fluglärmberechnungen nach CNOSSOS-EU

    Die EU-Umgebungslärmrichtlinie von 2002 bestimmt maßgeblich die gemeinsame Lärmschutzpolitik in der Europäischen Union. Wesentlicher Bestandteil ist die Ermittlung der Belastung durch Umgebungslärm nach gemeinsamen Bewertungsmethoden (CNOSSOS-EU), die ab 31. Dezember 2018 für die Lärmkartierung verbindlich anzuwenden sind. Das Berechnungsverfahren für den Fluglärm (CNOSSOS-Fluglärm) basiert auf der dritten Ausgabe des Doc. 29 der Europäischen Zivilluftfahrt-Konferenz und weicht in vieler Hinsicht von der nationalen Methode zur Fluglärmberechnung, der ćAnleitung zur Berechnung von Lärmschutzbereichen̮ (AzB), ab. Anders als die AzB zielt die Fluglärmberechnungsvorschrift von CNOSSOS-EU nicht auf Prognoseszenarien ab, sondern soll gemäß der Vorgabe der EU-Umgebungslärmrichtlinie die Fluglärmsituation in der Vergangenheit bestimmen. Damit ergeben sich auch andere Anforderungen an die Eingangsdaten. So gehen bei CNOSSOS-Fluglärm einzelne Luftfahrzeuge in die Berechnung ein, anstelle der in der AzB verwendeten Luftfahrzeugklassen. Datengrundlage von CNOSSOS-Fluglärm ist die ANP-Datenbank, die neben den luftfahrzeugspezifischen Aerodynamik- und Triebwerksdaten auch prozedurale Profile für die meisten Luftfahrzeuge enthält. Mithilfe der prozeduralen Profile lassen sich verschiedene Flugverfahren modellieren, die allerdings hinreichende Kenntnis der Flugparameter erfordern. Dies wiederum erschwert eine Anwendung in der Praxis und stellt auch die im Anhang II der Umgebungslärmrichtlinie geforderte Qualitätssicherung vor Herausforderungen.
